Review – Tom Fun Orchestra at the Park Theatre, Winnipeg July 17 2009

– review by Eugene Osudar/photo by Dallas Ludwick

i want to write beautiful
poetics
(i’m exhausted)
i have no,thing left to give
my ex wife is gone
away
forever, today,
(and last night)
i danced
harder than
(that’s not quite the truth)
no, i often dance
hard

fast
like lightning
to the deities
to the musicians
to the audience
“The power’s in his hands”
the power’s in their hands
and ours
we can dance
we can celebrate
we can cherish
life
love
or we can perish
by degrees
in the misery
the sadness
the grief
we sew
we can hug
and hold
and believe
in life
in love
again and again
(i want) to kiss
and be kissed
by stars moon
and by the sun
and by the dancing
mountains
the endless
undulating movements
of ocean waves
spreading Wings of Desire
(Wim Wenders)
over and around us
and (me)
we can fight
every moment
of every hour
of every day
and squeeze
the sweetest
nectar
to taste
upon
our glorious, expectant
tongues
dancing with tongues
speaking in tongues
ferociously kissing
furtively licking
deliciously,
the nectar
of each other’s
sex
the hunger
insatiable
“the power’s in his hands”
http://www.myspace.com/tomfunorchestra
if you imagine
Tom Waits
if you imagine
a power,house
group of musicians
if you imagine
the power in their hands
in their rocking souls
and ours
to change
the course
of misery
into destiny
of happiness
and freedom
and poetry
hold me
in these arms
i’ll not stay in the cold
cold
ground
i’ll climb out
and dance
and throw myself
to the deities
i am born again
every time
i feel a band
with passion
and power
of conviction
it is resurrection
(song,dance,
performance,
poetry)
they can try and kill me
but i’m here
and beautifully
in this moment
now
these are my hands
my generous hands
that oil and caress
beautiful topographies
wondrous geographies
curves and swerves
valleys and caves
prairies and hills
to mountains
dancing tongues
do climb
to perfect peaks
to suck the sweetness
of life’s greatest ecstasy
this is the greatest thing
orchestra
wall of sound
Tom Waits
(Ian MacDougall’s
voice and his lyrics)
dance,dance,dance
bathing sun shafts
of warming light
up/tempo,
dark and mysterious
when you need
to be left alone
in the murderous
dark
fiddle, banjo
accordion
voices, Carmen!
acoustic and electric
guitars
drums like walking spanish tango
trumpet
calling us to move
to shake, to jump, to leap,
to bounce about the dance floor
bass and more (when the time is right)
pianos,flugelhorns,cellos
upright bass, mandolin
Dance Orchestra!
and, a Brilliant
cd
You Will Land With a Thud
all
beautiful
songs
and tripping you
into the light fantastic
of
dance
dance
dance
wherever you may be
so i danced
and that meant
counting less
than 25
people
in a theater
that holds 300.
“i’ll get your names later,”
jokes Ian looking
at a near empty
beautiful
Park Theater.
i moved
(my power)
and the band moved
(their power)
15 of those people
(their power)
to lose
their
inhibitions
and becoming
the power
of now
we’re dancing
two sets,
we’re dancing
(this is what i began to write):
Tom Fun Orchestra
blazing
and igniting
storming
and raging
pouring walls of sound
into my power,
dancing through
my veils of skin
my house of bones
deep down in the marrow
and
coursing through my blood
waving undulating
i’m coming now
to that moment now
when I Am Now
Now!
it’s dance
i am alone
and
i’m dancing
(and then i changed my heart)
the sets,
D Minor
Gypsy
Marshall Applewhite
Heart Attack in an Old Motel
Throw Me to the Rats
When You Were Mine
Rum & Tequila
Rosie’s poignant fiddle tribute (to a fallen musician)
Watchmaker
Lungs
Carmen’s song, solo
acoustic,
Without My Love
Miles Davis
Xmas Song
Last of the Curious Thieves
Tar Pond Tango
Highway Siren Song Breakdown
Bottom of the River
Control Yourself
You Will Land With a Thud
so,
it’s not the ground
it’s the mountains
it’s the dancing
it’s the lightning
it’s the resurrecting
it’s the celebrating
Throw Me to the Rats
sounds horrible
it’s wonderful
i dare you
not to dance
i dare you
not to live
i dare you
not to be
in this
your moment
now
