The Canadian pop-punk band released their latest album 13 Voices earlier this year. The ten-track album marks the band’s first LP in five years. It follows 2011’s Screaming Bloody Murder. That record featured the Grammy-nominated song “Blood In My Eyes”.

Videos for songs from 13 Voices include “Fake My Own Death” and “War”. According to a press release, the latter track was picked as a single because of its importance to singer Deryck Whibley‘s personal life. Whibley, who is divorced from Canadian rock chanteuse Avril Lavigne, has credited the song for saving his live.

Whibley’s lowest point

“I was at my absolute lowest point of what seemed like a never-ending recovery,” he has said. “When I was at a tipping point of falling back into drinking or staying the course of recovery, I grabbed a pencil and paper instead of a bottle and started writing. Whenever I had any thoughts of giving up, I would read these lyrics to myself over and over again. They helped remind me of what it was that I was fighting for, and that I needed to keep fighting harder. Giving up was not an option.

Since its release earlier in the summer, the music video for “Fake My Own Death” has had over 3.3 million views.

Whibley began writing for 13 Voices immediately following a four-month stint in the hospital. The frontman recalls, “I had to learn how to do everything again – my motor skills, learning how to play guitar again… I couldn’t even walk at the time. It was really difficult, but at the same time if I didn’t have a record to make, I don’t think I would have recovered as quickly, or even at all. Writing music gave me a purpose. I had to get better.”

Whibley recorded, produced and engineered the album at his home in Los Angeles.

Other members include lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave Brownsound, co-lead guitarist/backing vocalist Tom Thacker, bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zumm.

Sum 41 – early days

Whibley and drummer Steve Jocz formed the band in 1996, in Ajax, Ontario. Three years later, the band signed an international record deal with Island Records. Sum 41 released their first EP, Half Hour of Power, in 2000. All Killer, No Filler, their 2001 full-length debut, album achieved mainstream success with its first single, “Fat Lip”. The track reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart.
