Dance-party band !!! (Chk-chk-chk) on tour in Vancouver for its fifth album, Thri!!!er. The sextet, fronted by singer Nic Offer, played Fortune Sound Club.
The Brooklyn/Portland/Sacramento sextet formed in 1996. The Snipe’s Shawn Conner interviewed Offer for the Vancouver Sun. Here’s an excerpt of that conversation.
Shawn Conner: The female vocal part on the single “One Girl/One Boy” from the new album is sung by Sonia Moore, who worked with MC Hammer. How did she come to be on the record?
Nic Offer: She’d been in the studio where we were recording. We were talking about the song, and we said we wanted a diva-type vocalist, and the engineer mentioned her. We called her up, she came in and knocked it out. We knew she’d sung with Hammer, but we didn’t know what she did for him. But we asked, and she’s the chick who goes “Hey hey” in the song “2 Legit 2 Quit”.
SC: You’re inviting fans who want to perform Moore’s part with you onstage to send the band a video or MP3 of them singing along, and then you’re picking one person to join you for the song in each city on the tour. How’s that been going?
NO: It’s been fun, it’s been interesting. You never know what you’re going to get. It’s interesting seeing the videos and MP3s roll in, and hearing all these people sing your song. It’s funny, because it’s normal for us to be onstage, but they’re totally nervous, it’s really exciting for them. There’s been a couple of girls who have been great, and no one’s been disastrous.
