Review–Black Lips at Sonic Boom Records, Toronto, March 28 2010

– by Eugene Osudar

The Black Lips are hot
real hot
2 sold out shows
at The Horseshoe
media lists packed
requests from crazy
Winnipeggers
and an in-store
performance at
Sonic
Booooooooommmmm!
Records on Bloor
across (kinda) from
Lee’s Palace where
i’m talking to Graeme
about music
as the rain falls
forming piddles
and puddles
round our shoes
as we for Thrush Hermit
to re/appear.

the black lips are so hot
that’s it’s “don’t contact
me, contact she” as their
rep holds his electronic
device to me with the name
of Ms Xyzzzzz.

it’s sunday. there’s more
than 100 hiplomats and punk
rockers with tattoos and
liquid oooooze dripping
from all the (re)pent-up
humidity
off the light fixture
onto the toque-headed
lead singer of the really
hot black lips, whew!

he says, “are you ready?”
we roar! he continues,
without missing a beat
generation gap, “Man,
we were born ready!”

and so the Black Lips
go and play their garage
rock, to scratch vinyl
acidic beginnings
underpinnings, feed,
backing, attacking
as we bobble-head bop
to their Cretin Rock.

toque-guy opens his mouth
under the mystery ooze
and a drip drops into
it, now, that’s courage!

songs about Paco, scream
yelp beer soaked songs
a brand new whistle song
as we’re encouraged to
join along the greater TO
whistle choir, a song with
Chuck Berry guitar chords,
from the Mississippi, to
songs about girls and beer,

the drummer is a pop
top
dervish spinning jackhammer
de-construction jammer.

this is
tie me up
and beat me with
your rhythm stick
rock.

8 songs,
27 minutes. just
enough to please
and tease and satisfy,
the heat treatment
seekers.

so, if you want to hear
and learn more
about The Black Lips
search and destroy
google, myspace,
website, youtube
and while you’re at it

No Bunny
(but you know all about them)

Jay Reatard
(but you Really know all about him)

The Angry Dragons
(but i bet you don’t know anything
about them!)
