Fine Times Hey Judas music video

Preview-Fine Time releases video for “Hey Judas”

– by Fatimah Yasin

Following the release of their self-titled debut album on Sept 18, Fine times have come out with a video for the track “Hey Judas”.

The Vancouver band consists of vocalist/guitarist Matthew Moldowan and vocalist/bassist Jeffrey Powell. The two regrouped to record the album in 2010 after aborting a project. A year later, they conceived Fine Times in Vancouver’s Warehouse Studio with producer Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, the New Pornographers, Mother Mother).

Redekopp opened a window of opportunity and the pair vaulted through. “We scrambled,” said Moldowan in a press release. “It really happened all of a sudden.” said Moldowan. The vigour of the quick start in 2011 carried all the way through to the finish line, a year later.

Moldowan conceptualized the video, which Keaven Lwandowski directed. Dandillion Wind Opaine, of the band Fan Death, contributed art direction.

It begins with the duo sitting on a sun-bleached beach. Their fatigued disposition is reinforced by the lyrics “Take all my money/don’t stop there/just beat me and drop me like a heathen”. The pair find themselves trapped on an island with a flamboyantly dressed tribe, whose masked appearances suggest they could make dress code for a type of quasi-masquerade party.

Moldowan elaborated on the concept of the video in a statement:

“We knew we wanted something visual and surreal, so I peeled through my movie collection and re-watched some old personal favs – Eyes Wide Shut and Eraserhead. With ideas in mind, I wanted to approach all of our scenes as drawn-out tableaus, with a focus on the look and arrangement of the characters in each shot. Dandi’s work in creating the masks and costumes was pivotal to bringing the shots to life.”

You can buy the single “Hey Judas” here. The full-length album CD and LP is available through the Fine Times website.
