Review – Meatdraw at Hooligans, Winnipeg, May 8 2009

-eugene osudar, pics Michelle Slota

like the wildest eastern
european wedding
(imaginable)
in the midst
of a full blown
gypsy circus performance
(unfathomable)
like the Wings of Desire
(Wim Wenders filmmmm)
the dance/the dance
(illimitable)
like the wings of an angel
on the trapeze
tremendously flying
of ease
of ease

Meatdraw
(hospitable)
opens with their
drummer
(marek)
pounding
strolling
through the audience
on the big drum
and the band
begins with
hand claps/hand claps
and the spectacle
the celebration
begins,begins

with a song
accurately
named
Crazy
and we begin
going (dance) crazy
Autumn,
their friend
selling merch,
and dancing
leaping,
writhing
squirming
willowing
orange (her hair)
just like autumn
hummmmmming
bright red tights
burn out the lights
burn out the lights

“and if you go crazy
take me with you
just open arms
and pull me through”

the brothers bozenich
gypsy wedding
carnival madness
and they’re dressed
for the wedding
marco/lead voice
ah yes, the lead maniac
and stefan
roaring/roaring
these maniacs!

sweet, oh you spontaneous maniacs!

we’re dancing
we’re dancing
to burn out the lights
there’s cherie
and michelle
there’s me
and autumn
and by night’s end
the floor is Crazy
is Crazy

“Are We Going To Die”
can you say
the classic
Town Called Malice
by The Jammmmm
(Paul Weller)
come on,
dance with me!
oh, Lily’s trumpet
and her dance
her dance

“are we going to die
are we going to die
how’s it going to end
what i want to know is”

Meatdraw
the crazy name
that only one has liked
this band name
this Meatdraw
is L Wong
her gleefully laughing eyes
as we sat in the legion
of the exchange district
awaiting, oddly
enough
the meatdraw
(she and her friends, did not win,
did not win)
meat wrapped in paper and plastic
for the love of Meatdraw

this is a band with vegetarians
in it
so please don’t protest
just dance, just dance

this is a band
that Few if any
would say
no to,
go to
and dance
and dance
to Meatdraw

saw playing
trumpet
flute
(lily)
a chain dropped
and pulled and dropped
and pulled
again and again
from a tin can
(megan)
(the last song
another Demanded
Encore Encore!
after an encore,
Devil In Our Bones
slow writhing
devil’s lament)

check the myspace
check the tour dates
check your bones
buy the cds
and dance
and dance
your bag of bones
and wear your smile
full,on,dial

i’ve been humming Old World
all day,
with the first line,
“i’ve been a rocket ship”
and so naturally,
we blasted off
rocky spine tingling
and did we dance?
oh yes we danced
we soared!
We Soared!

when i told John K Samson
of the Weakerthans
that Meatdraw
was playing Hooligans
friday night
his face lit up
(brightly,brightly)
for the Love of them
of Meatdraw
and despite their
commitment to the Icelandic festival,
Nuna, john and christine to

Iceland’s bluesy,bluegrass/folk/country
the exceptionally brilliant Lay Low
Lovisa and Petur
who played magically before
150 mesmerized souls
in the jam/packed Lo Pub
their canadian debut
(in winnipeg)(in winnipeg)
when next they play,
tens of thousands
at Glastonbury
and the end of the world festival
the large european festivals
of summer, of summer

john k and his wife the wondrously
talented christine fellows
biked to hooligans in the bitter cold
(it was snowing at 2:30 AM)
(only in winnipeg in May
in this(dis)May)
for Meatdraw
for the beauty
the celebration
the elation of
the dance
the dance

like children we danced
like children we played
like children we celebrated
just like children
again and again

We Have the Nighttime
Centaur
Crazy
Old World
In The Afterlife
Voodoo Don’t Work
A Very Evil Villain
Black License Plate
First Loves, Last Rights
Like A Wounded Animal
Born Together
and their theme song,
Meatdraw
i may have missed a couple!

no duds

only explosions

of dance
fun
celebration

so buy your ticket

everyone’s a winner (babe)

with Meatdraw

and that’s The Truth
