Gary Clark Jr. on tour in Vancouver, playing a sold-out show at the Commodore Ballroom on a Tuesday night in support of his album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. Accompanying the American blues guitarist were his longtime backing band, Johnny Radelat on drums and Johnny Bradley on bass.
Sonny Boy Slim is his fourth album since his 2004 debut, and his second major label (Warner Bros.) record, following Blak and Blu in 2012.
According to Alan Ranta‘s review of the concert in Exclaim!, Clark was last in Vancouver in 2015, opening for the Foo Fighters. In the review he wrote, “Clark had great tone and dexterous fingering, and his band supporting him every step of the way, but there were lots of cliché crutches, unimaginative riffs and arrangements that took some of the bite away from his skill. If you always know when someone is going to be spontaneous, it’s not much of a surprise.”
In Clark’s Wikipedia bio, it says that he was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and began playing guitar at twelve.
