Trailer wars – Total Recall vs Total Recall

Deja vu all over again – Total Recall 2012

The trailer for the remake of the movie based on the short story is coming to the multiplex this summer.

Total Recall is an update (read: more guns, faster cuts, all-CGI) of the 1980 Arnold Schwarzenegger fantasia of the same name. Both are based on the story “We Can Remember it For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. The science fiction author, whose work was always more about ideas than action, would either be amused or mortified at seeing his fear of a mind-controlling planet turned into gun-fueled popcorn-peddling entertainment.

The new Total Recall stars Colin Farrell (who can at least act) and Jessica Biel. It was directed by Len Wiseman (two Underworld movies), as opposed to Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct), who directed the first. Beyond that, the new trailer has a retreaded haven’t-we-been-here-before feel, and that’s notwithstanding the original.

In fact, even with all the bells, whistles and video-game graphics, the new trailer doesn’t look nearly as cool as the one for the 1990 flick. What do you think?
