Drinks – Tales of the Cocktail Vancouver 2012
Day 2 of the 2012 Tales of the Cocktail in Vancouver showcased tastings at the host venue, the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The tastings began in the a.m., but we arrived in time for the mid-afternoon events. We were, however, fortunate enought to taste some craft gins from an earlier showcase before the distillers packed up and left.
One ballroom featured Around the World in Whisky Days, cocktails based on whiskeys from around the world. In another room, a variety of spirits and liqueurs were paired with bite-size morsels – Forty Creek Whisky and pulled pork sliders with, Bowmore Single Malt and fresh oysters. Two rum events, one hosted by Bacardi and the other by Havana Club, ended the afternoon and took us into the evening, which for some included featured dinners at various locales, including the Legacy Liquor Store and Chambar.
That evening, Hendrick’s also hosted a party. The gin was flowing at the Vancouver Urban Winery, near Gastown, at three separate stations. A bride, groom and priest (or as I prefer, an exorcist) made the rounds, performing makeshift weddings to represent the marriage of tastes that make up gin. A deadly punch, the Improved White Cargo Punch, finally proved our undoing.
