John Grant at the Railway Club Saturday night in Vancouver. Grant is on tour for his new album, Pale Green Ghosts.

The singer/songwriter is a top 20 artist in the UK and lives in Iceland. The former frontman of The Czars, his last record had Midlake as backing band and Pale Green Ghosts features Sinead O’Connor singing backing vocals.

A member of Bjork‘s band plays bass and electronic pioneer Gus Gus produced the record. The dark, synth-y 80’s disco sound is layered with orchestral instrumentals and lyrics that thematically touch upon Grant’s HIV positive status, past cocaine addiction, homophobia, and heartbreak.

You can hear a stream of Pale Green Ghosts here.

Snipe photog Kirk Chantraine said, “What a great show! Can’t believe I’d never crossed paths with this guy’s music.”

Other raves:

“It’s hard to imagine a more enjoyable and rewarding hour of music being released this year than Pale Green Ghosts: self-obsessed but completely compelling, profoundly discomforting but beautiful, lost in its own fathomless personal misery, but warm, funny and wise.” – The Guardian – 5 Stars (Album Of The Week)

“An album that, rather than juggling empty pop-song clichés, opts to expose the rawest emotional nerves: truth and beauty, rather than lies and blather.” – The Independent – 4 Stars (Album Of The Week)

“A masterpiece” - UNCUT
