Carly Rae Jepsen makes the Sunday New York Times’ Playlist

In this weekend’s Sunday New York Times, Jon Caramanica gives top billing in the “playlist” music feature to Carly Rae Jepsen.

Calling the Vancouver-based artist and former Canadian Idol contestant a “Canadian pixie”, Caramanica focuses on the singer’s single “Call Me Maybe”, as well as it’s video, and praises the song for “working far harder than it appears to be. From a distance it’s breezy and sweet… But Ms. Jepsen, 26, is threading a needle here, winking at the tweens while keeping a more mature agenda on her mind…”

The critic also mentions Jepsen’s “sharp new Canadian EP Curiosity“, and calls her “a sassier Michelle Branch“. Read the full blurb here.

Jepsen’s star has been rising since she gained a fan in Justin Bieber, who can be seen in a video dancing to “Call Me Maybe” and who released Curiosity on his label Schoolboy Records (Interscope).
