Review and photos – Transistor 66 at the Royal Albert, Winnipeg Feb. 6 2010

– review by eugene osudar/photos by Ailsa Dyson

part two

of the Transistor 66
weekend at
The Albert

(a favorite,
legendary
and historic
venue
appears to be falling
into planned? ruin, where
are those fix-ups in the bar?
all i see is decay and destruction/
down to one decaying urinal!
in the Men’s, door ripped
from its hinges
hanging dead from
evil stink toilet stall.
i remember
when
there were 3 urinals
4 even!
and flooded, plugged toilets
in the Women’s
what’s going on
here?)

the show,

i missed some of The Farrell Brothers
set and that’s too bad
(having too much fun
dancing to Bon Scott, AC/DC
songs at The King’s Head,
Whole Lotta Angus),
the Farrells rock hard
and sadly not often
enough

tattooed
rockabilly
dancing tunes

www.myspace.com/thefarrellbros

i must say, a handful of rowdy
rude, feces-mouthed, pushy,
extremely drunk
women
made for another strange
gig night

what’s up
with the splattering of jerk,offs
in Winnipeg
audiences in the last
few weeks?

the dancing was extreme
stripping the layers
down i join
the call to movement
fight songs
taken literally by
the goon girls

Montreal’s Bloodshot Bill
played solo
Saturday night
and guttersnipe photographer
Ailsa Dyson showed me
some of the hottest pics
i’ve ever seen her take
at a show.

last night, Bloodshot Bill was joined by
3/4s of The Angry Dragons,
Jen on guitar
Ana on bass
and Bill Northcott on drums
(a couple of days practice)
and what transpired
in 35 minutes
was Bill’s scatting grrrrowling/snarling
rockabilly madness
and
a seriously searing
punk rock set
call it punkabilly
with Bill directing drum stops
like a maestro
and pouring sweat
from his long bangs
water,falling down
his nose and chin
one endless
stream.

hot/hot/hot.

The Angry Dragons
just another great Winnipeg
band. when one dies
another is born,
like,

Joe Warkentin’s new band

(formerly The Mayhem-maker of The Hot Live Guys)

The High Thunderers
played the last set
of the night.

they set up
on the floor
(Joe was at the Monotonix show,
but he’s always taken his hard/rocking,
punk rock soul
dangerously hard to the floor)
a three piece band
Joe in suit and tie!
(highly unusual)
Joanne of The Angry Dragons
on bass
no mike in front of her
(so we don’t get her amazing vocals)

www.myspace.com/thehighthunderers

it’s Joe moaning and groaning
no words
(well, maybe there are words
like
blues-talk gone punk lunatic wild)
angry blues sounds
(check the myspace songs,
love the recording!
pops and ticks and fuzz
scratchings)
and
shocking/squealing
ear=splitting
feedback
punk

raw
energy
raw
liturgy
raw
insanity

with Joe tied to the mike
going round and round
as the mike
moves
in circles
as he moves
round and round
the swirling
thundering drums
and feed,
backing
guitar
sound
s

when he can
Joe lashes out
and thrashes
on the floor

a work in progress
how to translate
Joe’s insanity
with his band
on the floor
just like Monotonix
like he’s always done it
sensed it
believed in it
deep within
the punk fabric
of his soul

he knows it
he feels the Townes Van Zandt
blues
ain’t no zippety doooo daaaaaah
in his raw songs
in his anger
in his power

how to translate it indeed?

as i see
Erica
formerly of The Quiffs
watching

i can’t help
imagine,

her doing her scream
moaning
so raunchy and sexy
and sexual
and gritty

and Joe just bashing into the gathered
punkers
smashing floor moshing
deconstructing
punk
moaning
symphonic
feedback

we’re talking Beethoven
genius

and another
beautiful dream
Winnipeg band.

maybe?

just maybe?

i wondered if Erica imagined it
too?
