Review – Tegan and Sara at the Burton Cummings Theatre, Winnipeg, Jan 14 2010

– by Eugene Osudar

bird calls
have their place
their time
(Not in this
concerto
rhyme)

it was a crime
(last night)
the arsehole
of the day
made its appearance

His appearance
over and over
and over and (yet)
over again and
again and again,

between Every song
as Tegan and Sara
pleaded
nicely, rudely
and nice;ly again
for the arsehole
and the merely
fanatical
to listen
simply to shut
up and listen,

respectfully.

to their funny
stories

there is no educating
fanatics
and arseholes
born
from that rearest
(okay)
most wondrous (s)exquisite
end
of our topography

two hills and a beautiful
valley
oh loveliest
foliage
and
what glorious
mysterious caving
exploring and imploring
The Mightiest Rose
the petals
un,fol,ding

oh humanity
(google ee cummings
for his poem)
i hate you when
you insist
on bird
calling when
you’re asked
over and over
to stop
to quit
to be respectful
and mannered

and what do you do?

you display
your rear for all
to hear
your tiresome
farts
endlessly
hooting
and polluting

the beautiful air
of the beautiful

the syllables
the words
the sentences
the stories

stuttering
shattering
flow

sold out show
1600 plus people
(mostly women)
on a warm
Thursday evening
in Winnipeg
in January

a fan even fainted
in the packed pit
up front,
carried out by security.
the heat the push
of frenzied adoration

for
An Horse
from Australia
no wide-eyed stories
of the time
they played
Winnipeg
and it minus 40.

it wasn’t/
it was minus 8.

a wonderful night
ruined
yes, Ruined
by an idiot male

shame on you
ill mannered
ill cultured
shrill vultured
sqwwwwwwwaaaaahhhhhkkkkkkkkks.

you hooter.
your diarrhea
belongs in the gutter
(snipe)
you urchin
you’re filth.

as for the music.

my deities,
gods and goddesses

i danced.

short sharp
exciting
songs
of ecstatic movement
and words
like wishes
like salvation
like surfing
and wanting “back in your head”
i’m dancing
“out of my mind”
wanting you
wanting you

28 songs
2 hours

s(pl)urge overkill
very few left

i suggest
an Elvis Costello
type of random song
wheel
perhaps, a drawing
from a hat
for the devotees
who stand up front
and they get to keep
specially written
signed song titles
on the backs of a band
photo

15, 20 songs max
after all,
only Neil Young
Bruce Springsteen
The Weber Brothers
and Prince
are allowed to play
spiritually over 80 minutes
and anywhere near and above
2 hours (traffic)

arrow
dont rush
the ocean
walking with a ghost
i bet it stung
good go
speak slow
northshore
alligator
the cure
on directing
paperbackhead
redbelt
nightwatch
soil soil
knife going in
so jealous
burn your life down
nineteen
hell
sentimental tune
someday
the con

back in your head
feel it in your bones
my number
call it off
living room

8 songs could have
easily
been zapped

you make the choice
it’s your freedom to
be heard
to be a hooting bird

kate and damon

Australian duo
An Horse [An Horse interview]
played 35 minutes
beginning and ending strong
sagging in the middle
a little Go-Betweens
a little Died Pretty
pop
songs
wonderful
thoughtful
tempo changes
strumming
hummable
England inspired
melodies

know this, we’ve noticed
postcards
dress sharply
company
little lungs
scared as fuck
listen
camp out
shoes watch

i hope Friday’s
show
isn’t (Johnny)
marred by another
arsehole
and fans who aren’t
prepared to Listen.

stories of surfing girls
of first time
song writing collaborations
of New Kids On The Block
and an 8 year old girl’s
reverence, shhhhhh, an
“emotional episode”

Listen.
and Dance.
