Review and photos – Nightwood at The Boat, Toronto, April 1 2010

– text by eugene osudar/photos by Amber Anne Dawkins

every time i write
it’s as if
this is the last thing
i will ever write
in my life

My Life
is a temporary beauty.
a blip kiss in time/

so this isn’t puke
this isn
t vomiting
this isn’t typing
ain’t no hyping

this isn’t pimping my soul
this type/type/type,writing
is deeper than all oceans
and
deeper than your swirling,
(hypnotizing)
beautifully
brown, blue, green, black
eyes

deeper than your rock n roll soul

and if you’re punk
really punk
deeper than
your DIY heart.

cheyenne takes photos
sometimes for guttersnipe
and she dances
and she said something to me
last night

she wants a singer to sing
a song like it’s the last song
they will ever sing.,

that’s the way i like every song
played and performed

like it’s the last.

and this word
and that emotion
and that dance

will be my last.

or not.

but it could be.

so i’m living it
and loving it
and believing
it
will be my last
and i love you.
musician.
dancer.
music lover.

Jeremy
plays drums for Parlovr
and that !band! and he plays drums
like every beat
will be
his
last!

That’s why I Love the way he plays
and why i love
Parlovr.

they believe in The Love.
and The Perfect Kiss.
of their music.

and i’m open.
my heart is always
open
to The Perfect Kiss.
The Love.

so when i heard
Jeremy
of Parlovr
was playing The Boat
on April 1st
with a band
i didn’t even myspace

Nightwood,

i knew.

i had to be there.

www.myspace.com/nightwoodband

and to see
and feel
Jeremy’s smile
the light
from within when
he recognized me

that’s a beautiful thing.

and he thanked me
for writing
the truth
about Parlovr
in a guttersnipenews
review

in 35 minutes
and
8 songs

Nightwood
destroyed me.

the !dancing!

the drumming is tribal
the vocals
are gutterelle

the beat and words and performance
throbs.
rubs you raw.
and dances you
into the other worlds
of your uniqueness.
your exquisite you(ness)

a newness
every time
you breathe the poetic
now
of the moment.

just take off.
“and make me
like it. take me
home and help
me spike it.”

Alex Chilton.

and the 40 or so
who stuck around The Boat
in Kensington Market
for their set.

experienced
the last great songs they’ll
hear and feel and throb to
until
they see another band
as passionate as
Nightwood.

and yes, The Boat’s decor
is that of a boat.
i liked the club.
it’s small.

and that’s the kinda cool
place you want to see a band
that smokes and sizzles.

small and immediate
and a place where
you sail oceans.
deep
deep
oceans.

heavy magic is coming
man timer
johnny
bright girls of summer
sunken mountains
island of forgetfulness
skeleton crew
gretta at a window

Amber Goodwyn
Erin Ross
Jeremy MacCuish
are Nightwood.
are beautiful.
are passionate.
are punk.

Nightwood
The Boat
April 1

About Eugene Osudar

“born, august 16, 1963. i’m 45, and yes, i’m getting too old for this. bring out the rocking chair. my first concert, november 1978, elvis costello and the attractions. i was 15. their blisteringly brilliant 65 minute set only served somebody to affirm my new direction in the musical parallel universes, new wave punk alternative, oh sanctity oh celebration (!Freedom!) college radio! i’m old, i’m used up and i’m free. i see 50something Full sets of music every month and dance most of them. and when i dance, i mean to say, I Dance and Celebrate, 2/3/4 hours a night. The Gaslight Anthem. The Boss. The Weber Brothers. The Wind Ups. i’ll dance with Los Campesinos. i’ll move to The Long Winters. The Replacements. Husker Du. The Pogues. oh elvis costello, oh Clash! i could go/go/go Gogol Bordello forever. L(eonard) Cohen. come, Dance With Me (Old 97s) wherever you may be, sincerely, eugene
