Review – Doves at the Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver May 21 2009

The Doves show last night was good. Reasons why:

They warmed me up for Sasquatch this weekend!

Doves are the poor man’s Coldplay and I like the poor man’s anything.

“There Goes the Fear” and “Firesuite” are still catchy as shit.

The Commodore was packed.

It’s been a few years since their last release, 2005’s Some Cities, and the band seemed super appreciative of the turn-out. Nice lads!

The gap between albums is refreshing. Doves doesn’t just churn it out, the trio fine-tunes its songs into unhurried, lilting anthems.

Doves share its sound with a lot of other one-word UK bands like Elbow and Travis, but has managed to release albums of a consistent quality – can’t really say the same for, oh I don’t know, Keane. Wah wah.

The new tracks from Kingdom of Rust have that wall-of-sound deal going on, so I didn’t feel guilty ignoring parts of the show to make out with my very cute date. Holla!
