Review – DJ Shadow at the Commodore Ballroom, Vancouver, Oct 25 2010

DJ Shadow is so much more than a sound artist, and his live shows offer a glimpse into the versatility and range of his creativity.

His Monday night Vancouver appearance had the DJ and producer perform inside an orb on stage, with a visual show projected on to it and the wall behind. You really only got the full effect if you were looking at it dead on but the visuals were captivating (from awesome space imagery and crop circles to a bird’s-eye view of a baseball getting knocked out of the park). I was a little worried that we wouldn’t get to see him in action but eventually the orb spun around and the audience got to see the DJ and his magical hands perform.

His set included tracks that the audience wanted to hear, the ones that solidified his reputation from Endtroducing…, The Private Press and The Outsider, but remixed with a faster, updated D&B sound. He came back on for a long encore while the audience was chanting his name before finishing up the night.

DJ Shadow has a new album coming out in 2011, and hopefully he’ll be back again with another exciting and sensory-overloaded show. You can check out some of his new sounds online (he’s released one himself called Def Surrounds Us) and while it’s yet again a different direction for the artist, and while so far it’s received mixed reviews, you can’t fault the guy for continually coming up with sounds and not being chained to his past.
