San Diego two-piece Pinback returned to Vancouver for a show at Venue Tuesday night.

Armistead Burwell Smith IV (aka Zach Smith) and Rob Crow formed the band, named after a character in the John Carpenter movie Dark Star, back in 1998. Since then, many musicians, some of them drummers, have played with the duo.

Pinback’s more recent album is Information Retrieved, released in Oct 2012. It’s the group’s first full-length since 2007’s Autumn of the Seraphs. According to AV Club, a song from that album, “Good to Sea”, was an “unexpected success”.

In that same piece, a review of Information Retrieved, Jason Heller writes of the new album: “Pinback seems physically unable to write a song that’s anything less than gorgeous, so that isn’t the issue. Tracks like ‘Glide’ and ‘Drawstring’ are sterling examples of the group’s precise, airtight pop, full of Crow’s immaculate jangle and sugary singsong. They also fail to rouse themselves from hibernation.” Heller gives the album a B-.
