Jenny Hval at the Cobalt in Vancouver. The show comes near the start of the North American tour in support of her album, Apocalypse, girl.
Håvard Volden on electronics joined the Norwegian singer/songwriter onstage. During the show, Hval performed with an exercise ball (she is pictured with one on the cover the album as well) and, until the last few songs, in a wig.
On Flavorwire, Jillian Mapes describes Hval’s 2013 album Innocence Is Kinky as “an intoxicating and raw rock’n’roll rumination on sexuality.” Apocalpyse, girl, writes Mapes, “explores identity (gender and otherwise) through mystical freak-outs for orchestra and Bjork-style belting.”
Sacred Bones released the album on June 9.
Hval’s current headlining tour follows support slots in North America with St. Vincent and Perfume Genius and a European tour.
