Bands With Cats – Shawn and Laura from OK Vancouver and Ramona
– by Cheena Jean Normandin
What’s your cat’s name? Ramona
What’s Ramona’s origin story? Laura got Ramona for her 13th birthday, and another cat, Ramona’s brother Oliver. But Oliver was eaten by a coyote a few years ago. We think Ramona saw the death of Oliver. Ramona is now a bit freaked out most of the time.
Where’s she from? What’s her breed? Ramona is from the New Westminster cat shelter. Her breed is “Black Cat”.
Who feeds your cat?
Usually Shawn. Ramona is a picky eater. But Shawn cooks things just right. Shawn is Laura’s dad. Ramona lives with Laura’s parents because we have been on tour and traveling and/or living in a van for most of the past three years.
What’s your cat’s theme song?
“Don’t Give Up” by Lake. She has a bit of cat depression sometimes so she likes positive anthems.
What is the last overwhelmingly adorable thing you caught your cat doing?
Right now Laura is making a patchwork quilt for our baby who is coming in May. Last night while she was organizing the pattern of the pieces Ramona kept laying on them and rolling around to ruin the pattern and delay the assembly. We think she might be feeling jealous of the shifting family dynamics.
Do you have reason to suspect that your cat is hatching any schemes at the moment?
Ramona likes to sneak into rooms at night and chew on electrical wires… not sure her plan but I think she doesn’t like people and all their plug-in needs.
What is the last thing that your cat murdered?
Ramona is quite the hunter. She usually captures mice and moths. Her most victorious kill occurred when she murdered what appeared to be a yellow canary. Very likely a neighbours pet from inside their home. Lately she hasn’t been killing much because she has been a bit scared to go outside.
What does your cat like to listen to when it’s getting amped to go on the prowl?
The calm steady beat of her fierce cat-heart. Or “Palapa Lupita” by Buvette.
If a genie in the bottle gave your cat three wishes, what do you think they would be?
She would wish that Oliver never got eaten by that coyote, that we never left on tour again, and that we would hang out giving each other back scratches for the rest of our lives.
