Post-Con comic book movie news: Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Ant Man and Superman

– by Clinton Hallahan

Comic-Con is over! Sadness mixed with relief! Here are some stories you might have missed during the craziest week in comics.

– Hugh Jackman likes the new director brought on to helm The Wolverine, a follow-up to the downright awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Jackman says that James Mangold (Walk the Line, Kate & Leopold) is going to “knock it out of the park.” I’ll always be the first to defend Mangold’s remake of 3:10 to Yuma, but consider me still skeptical. No matter how you slice it, he’s a step down from previously attached director Darren Aronofsky. At least the script and the title remain intact.

Watch – Hugh Jackman talk about new Wolverine director:

– The Dallas Obsever chatted with James O’Barr, creator of the Crow about the upcoming reboot of one of the first truly great comic book movies. To summarize, he said: “Remaking The Crow, a film that is only 15 years old, is kind of ridiculous at this point. I don’t think anyone sets out to make a bad film, but the first Crow was a $10 million movie. I don’t think it matters how much money you throw at it or what stars you put in it – no one is going to top what Brandon and Alex Proyas did in the first film.” I’m inclined to agree. Reboot turnarounds like this should only happen when the films being rebooted were awful (looking at you, Fantastic Four).

– In another installment of “Entertainment Journalist Misses The Point”, hitflix.com accused Tom Hardy, who plays Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, of comparing Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise to Starbucks. What the actor actually said was, “These movies are huge vehicles to make a lot of money… and make a large audience happy. So now you’re at the very top level of trying to bring character work in a boutique way to something that is, y’know, Starbucks.” So he tries to have a frank discussion about bringing some art into a restrained work environment with millions on the line and gets spanked for comparing the work to a very profitable and popular food chain. Way to listen.

– Edgar Wright is pretty much the coolest person alive. His resume includes the BBC series Spaced and Look Around You, he directed Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, he hooked up with current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat to pen The Adventures of TinTin for Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg and is now talking more seriously about his potential direction of an Ant Man movie. While the lesser-known superhero was a founding member of The Avengers, he will not be appearing in that film. To fill the void, Wright is writing a stand-alone film about the shrinking scientist that he seems pretty optimistic about. As he is one of the preeminent directors of our time, I’m pretty optimistic too.

– Every report I have seen has decried a poor script for Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel, so the news that the film is being pushed back six months comes as a relief. The film was going to be up against TinTin and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in December 2012, and now stays a few weeks away from Iron Man 3 in June 2013. Having Christopher Nolan grandfather this project was likely the cause of the delay, as I doubt anyone takes Snyder seriously on script issues post-Sucker Punch.

– It stands an ice cube’s chance in Hell to make it to the screen, but a Captain Canuck movie is in the works. Canada’s answer to Captain America has been pretty much a non-entity for decades now, but that’s not going to stop Mind’s Eye Entertainment from taking a crack at the superhero genre. Hooray?

– The guys who did Crank 2 are trying their hand at making a Ghost Rider movie that isn’t terrible. Nicolas Cage is still in it. SuperHeroHype has some scans of this month’s Empire Magazine with the first promo images, including a sweet looking Ghost Rider, a puzzled looking Cage and a manic looking Irdis Elba (The Wire, Thor) who now also stars. The same issue of Empire Magazine had a bunch of Judge Dredd stuff in it too if, you know, you’re super old and remember Judge Dredd.

– This is a picture of The Avengers assembled. That is all.
