The Jezabels at the Imperial in Vancouver. The show marked the Australian band’s second visit to the Imperial, after playing the venue in 2014 in support of their second album, The Brink. Sunday night’s concert was part of a tour for the group’s latest album, Synthia. The tour began in Los Angeles on Nov. 9 and wraps up in Nashville Dec. 7.
The new record was released in February. But plans to promote the record with an extensive tour were put on hold due to keyboardist Heather Shannon‘s ovarian cancer relapse. Half a year later, she’s in remission. Besides Shannon, the Australian quartet includes vocalist Hayley Mary, guitarist Sam Lockwood and drummer Nik Kaloper. The members met as students at the University of Sydney.
Synthia is the third album from the band. Rolling Stone called the album, which the quartet recorded in Sydney with producer/engineer Lachlan Mitchell, “…a strong return to form. It’s a dark, even menacing, record at times.” Mitchell also produced the group’s initial EPs, issued in 2009/10 and including The Man Is Dead, She’s So Hard, and Dark Storm.
The band released their breakout debut, Prisoner, in 2011. Their follow-up album, The Brink (2014), caught the attention of Rolling Stone, Esquire, Elle Magazine and more. Noisey called the band’s sound “a bold cut of emotive, epic-pop, hinged on Hayley’s sky-scaling Stevie Nicks-ian melodies.”
