Daughter in Vancouver Friday night. The London-based trio is on tour for its second album, Not to Disappear.

Fronted by Elena Tonra, the band formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France. Daughter released its debut full-length, If You Leave, in 2013.

Annie Zaleski reviewed Not to Disappear for the AV Club upon the album’s release early this year. She wrote that the fact that the album “does sound so similar to other artists can be an occasional detriment. However, Daughter steers these influences into new territory by employing brutal lyrical honesty. The album focuses on the collapse of important relationships–whether romantic, familial, or even the one people have with their own self–and examines the wreckage with an empathetic but candid perspective.”

Singles and/or videos taken from the record include “Doing the Right Thing”, “Numbers”, and “No Care”. In an interview with the AV Club, Tonra said that she’d gotten the idea for the lyrics to “New Ways”, another song off of Not to Disappear, from graffiti in a bathroom stall somewhere in Scandinavia.

According to Tonra, “I can’t remember where it was. I’d like to say it was in Sweden, or maybe it was Scandinavia, but I think it was Sweden. There was loads of graffiti everywhere, and there was one that was, ‘I need new ways to waste my time.’ So I nicked it from that. I saw it and I loved it. As much as it makes sense for that context–people sitting, having a wee, and writing messages to each other–I was thinking in my brain that, in life, I need new ways to waste my time. So it stuck with me.”
