Animal Collective Tuesday night in Vancouver.
TheAmerican experimental pop band is on tour for its tenth album, Painting With. The follow-up to the 2012 album Centipede Hz, it was released earlier this year. Colin Stetson and John Cale (Velvet Underground) contribute to the record. Reviews have been generally mixed, with pitchfork.com giving it a 6.2 and consequenceofsound.net a B.
Animal Collective band formed in Baltimore, Maryland in 2003. Members include Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz).
According to Wiki, “The band members met in school and started recording together in various forms of collaboration from a young age.” The group was originally a duo comprised of Lennox and Portner, but all four members contributed to the 2003 album Here Comes the Indian.
Group members also, in 1999, established the label Paw Tracks. 2000’s Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished (2000) is retroactively considered the first Animal Collective record. They released their most commercially successful album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, in 2009. Uncut magazine called it “one of the landmark American albums of the century so far”.
