Preview – Three Night Stand
– by Shawn Conner
Who is Pat Kiely?
He’s one of the creative minds behind the delicious 2008 book-world satire (yes, you read that right – a book-world satire) Who is KK Downey? A quirky Canadian comedy that chose some rather unusual (some might even say “niche”) subject matter, it mocked the controversy behind JT LeRoy, a literary sensation whose supposed gritty background was revealed to be a hoax (remember the short story collection The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things?).
Kiely also played the pompous rock critic Connor Rooney, one of the movie’s more inspired characters.
Kiely is back, this time as the writer/director of a new romantic comedy. In Three Night Stand, Carl (Sam Huntington) takes his wife Sue (Meaghan Rath) to a bed-and-breakfast in the Laurentian mountains. Unbeknownst to Carl (and Sue), the b-and-b is run by his ex-girlfriend, Robyn (Emmanuelle Chriqui).
Though it has a conventional rom-com plot, Three Night Stand does have some quirky touches, primarily in a supporting cast of characters that includes another couple staying at the B’n’B (a mother and son with a strange relationship) and Carl’s work-wife, Stacey (Reagan Pasternak) and her intense yogi boyfriend.
Three Night Stand runs Jan. 25 – 29 at The Rio Theatre. Kiely and star Meaghan Rath will be in attendance for a special screening with Q&A on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
