Preview – Hallow2ween, Halloween at the Waldorf, The Parade of Lost Souls Dance Party and The Musical Massacre

Having trouble figuring out what to do for Halloween? TheSnipe has compiled a list of some of the city’s best events taking place over Halloween weekend.
What: HALLOW2EEN
Where: W2 Media Cafe
When: Friday Oct 28, 10p.m.
Headlined by Emika, opener for one of the most talked about shows of 2011 Amon Tobin, HALLOW2EEN at the W2 Media Cafe will feature a three floor, two stage indoor black light festival with installations and performances by Micheal Red, Max Ulis, and Amanda Rude.
This event is part of the W2 Hallow2een Black Light Series, which features over 22 performers and installations showcasing emerging and established media artists and electronic music producers over the course of four events. For information about the other Hallow2een events click here.
What: A Happy Ending Halloween
Where: Fortune Sound Club
When: Friday Oct 28, 9p.m.

Fortune Sound Club, Dose.ca and Blk Out will host a Halloween edition of one of Vancouver’s favorite nights: Happy Ending Fridays. The event features Rico Uno, Ricky Mars, Genie and others. Prizes and “surprises” for best costumes.
What: Dinner for the Dead
Where: The Waldorf
When: Friday Oct 28 and Saturday Oct 29, 7p.m.
$55 (Gratuity included) $75 (Gratuity and admission into Halloween at the Waldorf that evening included)
The Waldorf will host two Dinner for the Dead events as part of their four-day, property-wide Halloween bash. The press release describes the three-course Oaxacan dinner event as a “sacred performance ritual and Oaxacan feast.” Attendees are requested to bring a picture or personal item of a departed one that they would like to remember and place it at the Alter of the Dead. An interactive ritual-for-the-dead performance will be led by artists Emilio Rojas, Guadalupe Martinez and Matias Armendaris.
The Waldorf’s four-day festival will include a 16-story drop of death and midway games in their parking lot, as well as haunted hotel rooms, an erotic holographic theatre, four nights of entertainment and daytime events for families. What: Dance or Die!
Where: The Rickshaw Theatre
When: Sat Oct 29, 9p.m.

One of this year’s best bang-for-your-buck Halloween events takes place at the Rickshaw Theatre. Dance or Die! features Vancouver bands Defektors as AC/DC, White Lungs as The Wipers, Peace as The Cramps and Aquanaut as Black Sabbath. A dance party with DJs Justin Gradin, Genie and Cherchez will follow. If that’s not enough to sway you to go,the promise of smoke machines, scary movies playing on the big screen and firecrackers in the alley should be.
What: Hellfire Club (Halloween hedonism) takes over
Where: Cafe Montmartre
When: Sat Oct. 29, 8p.m.
$5 at the door
Parisian-style cafe Montmartre will host its own Hellfire Club, named after the erotic illuminati of the eighteenth century, whose members were often high-society intellectuals that came together to explore boundaries of sexual mores and hedonist prank. The event features turbo-charged progressive rock band Man Your Horse, Blake and Tasty Animals. Victorian-era boudoir costumes encouraged.
What: Harajuku Halloween
Where: Electric Owl Social Club
When: Sat Oct 29, 9 p.m.
$25-$30, more at the door
Electric Owl will throw a Harajuku-inspired Halloween party featuring DJs Flipout, SKLA and Jesse James. Vancouver’s own Love & Electrik will also perform at the event. Costume inspiration beyond Gwen Stefani’s creepy Harajuku girl-clan can be found here.
What: Parade of Lost Souls Dance Party
Where: Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph Street, Vancouver BC
When: Sat Oct 29, 9 p.m.
$20 in advance, $25 at the door
Public Dreams will host a post-secret souls walk dance party at the Maritime Labour Centre. All proceeds from the event will go towards the Public Dreams Society and the Parade of Lost Souls Festival, which lost a significant amount of funding due to arts cuts in 2009. The event will feature DJs Timothy Wisdom, Rico Uno, Cherchez La Femme and MY!GAY!HUSBAND! Fire performances will also take place outside of the dance party at 9 p.m.
What: The Musical Massacre
Where: 560
When: Mon Oct 31, 10 p.m.
One of Vancouver’s most promising Halloween events takes place in one of the city’s most underrated venues: 560. The Musical Massacre features Michael Red, Vincent Parker and Vancouver super-duo Hot Sex & High Finance. Free candy, costume prizes and a 28,000 square foot venue decked out in Halloween gear will surely result in a Halloween to remember.
