Review – The Bonaduces at the Royal Albert, July 25 2009

between the sets
the Albert empties
so damn hot in there
we’re pouring out
every liquid
we’re cooling down
a hotbox inside
cooling, relieving,
breathing, gulping
breeze
on the out,
side

it’s a party
it’s a scene
on Albert Street
in the Exchange District

(they’re knocking
down another treasure
of early 20th century architecture
it’s our city’s heritage
“oh it’s just another empty building”
it’s an empty shell
what the hell
does it matter anyway!
it breaks my heart
rubbling a Beautiful Thing
for another parking lot,
Mr Sentimental
but!
good news,
they’re keeping the facade,
Mr Sarcasm,
the shell
empty,
i’m so Unsatisfied)

http://www.myspace.com/thereplacements81

we’re on the fringe
of the Fringe
Festival and
Whiskey Dix
the Sexual Healing market
down the street
people spilling
and pouring
it out
all night long
and well into
the sunrise

The Ripperz
step on stage
and begin,

On My Way

http://www.myspace.com/theripperz

the slow,
ly
burning
sing/a,long
their fans
(their friends)
know every word
of Every song
and sing
along

eyes shining
core’s melting
on the inside

to be in the heart
of
or on the edge
of
this kind
of
intense
Love
devotion
fragile
emotion
is a wondrous
(s)experience
it’s an orgasmmmmmmm

i’m getting there
to that releasing
point
my being
hopelessly devoted to
The Ripperz

i’m singing
along, i’m
On My Way

it’s the song i know

and then we’re flying on
the next six songs,

210 Night Time
Eyes
Fly
New One
Born Fighting
Home Sweet Home

take flight
chicks,
birds,
babies
gotta fly
on their own

set free
we’re moving
singing
being

it’s 30 minutes
it’s so hot inside
on the stage
Travis Chris and Mark
passion
(b)rushing
canvas
Color Me
Impressed
(The Replacements)
it’s a masterpiece

Bonaduces

one last reunion
show?
make it an annual affair
i need to cheat on
something
anything with
something truly
spectacular

the previous reunion show
interrupted by the high humidity
and sensitivity
of fire alarms
three times
we had to file out
of The Lo Pub
calmly
to false high humidity
alarms

three times lucky
(i hope not)

Doug McLean (Paperbacks)
Mike Koop (Kicker)
Bob Somers
Chris Heibert

if you watch this dark
YouTube clip from previous
hairstyles
you’
ll see the why of
the Now
of The Bonaduces

Mike flying!!!!!!!!!!
a work of
staggering, heart,breaking
genius (damn fine title!)
heels so nearly licking
his long frizzes!
Doug roaring, shaking
Chris calmly pounding
with a dance rhythm
to his shoulders
Bob’s curls exploding,
bopping and posing
Rock Stance!

you can see why they
list Prince and Bruce Springsteen
as their influences
on myspace
yeah they’re serious and yeah
it’s a joke
at the same time
that’s the utter brilliance
of The Bonaduces
Danny Bonaduce!

Judy Blume Weekend
Holly
Sara’s Black PJs
Bomb Threat at Montgomery High
Catherine O’Clock
Early Ayn Rand
Android at the Superhero Party
Bee Sting Necklace
Eyes as Balck as Blueberries
I Nominate My Kitten for The King of The Dead
Beat On the Betamax
A Separate Lid Behind Closed Eyes

40 minutes

we’re up front taking
it all in
the leaps and jumps
and kicks
the poses
the throbbing vein
on the side of Bob’s dome
he’s roaring the backing vokes
and this time
Doug’s just into it
not caring about how it sounds
out there
it doesn’t matter
it’s all about the performance
there were a few false starts
and high hopes,

there’s a sadness
when you see
heart,breaking
staggering
genius
and knowing
only 200 at the Albert
on a sweltering hot
Saturday night
can see it and feel it
and share it,

you missed it
people.

they toured
and left
it all on the stage
every night
they played
in every city
every festival
they played it
with Passion
Performance
Chills
and seriously
good songs,

did you see it?

tell me.
