Concert preview – Trace Bundy

Trace Bundy - born with a guitar in his hand?
Trace Bundy – born with a guitar in his hand?

Trace Bundy plays the Ironworks, 235 Alexander, in Vancouver tomorrow night (Thursday, Sept 16; doors at 7, show at 8, tix $15 at the door) – and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this amazing guitarist in a small room.

From teaching rock and ice climbing to teaching civil engineering at the University of Colorado to professional musician,  Bundy has had a pretty interesting career path. Now known as the “acoustic ninja” or (by us) as “the capo guy”, Bundy has earned a rep as a musician’s musician, but don’t let that scare you – this guy plays guitar in the same kind of physical, visceral way as Wilco’s Nels Cline (half man, half guitar). Check out this video montage of Bundy, which includes the Guns ‘N Roses chestnut “Sweet Child O Mine”:

The Minnesota-born Bundy is self-taught, having learned to play through guitar magazine tabs of Metallica songs. Except for the G ‘N R tune, though, his music is definitely not metal; with its harmonics, looping and use of multiple capos, it’s more like a progressive (but not pretentious) folk kind of thing. Anyway, miss at your own peril – this is going to be one heckuva show.
