Nicole Atkins released her full-length debut Neptune City in 2007. Her second album, Mondo Amore, is even better.
Neptune City introduced us to Atkins’ sound, which is a mix of Brill Building and Phil Spector-ish pop, classic rock ‘n’ roll and a little bit of soul and psychedelia. The highlight was the record’s last song, “Party’s Over”, a stunning and indelible way to end a record, and one that left listeners wanting more.
At last, we have more. The New Jersey-raised singer/songwriter has released her follow-up album, Mondo Amore. “Vultures”, the opening track, gives some indication of Atkins’ baroque pop and thrilling vibrato, but the record is full of a great songs, including the soul-influenced “Cry Cry Cry” and some terrific rock ‘n’ roll in “You Come to Me” and “My Baby Don’t Lie”.

Nicole has a Vancouver connection, too – she sang backups on former Vancouverite AC Newman’s second album, Get Guilty.
Nicole Atkins plays the Media Club tonight (Friday, Feb 11 2011) with Cotton Jones. It’s gonna rock.
