Listen – Son Lux, “Rising”

Son Lux

Son Lux creates album in one month, releases single

NY’s Ryan Lott did a very uncharacteristic thing for his one-man-act Son Lux. For his second album, We Are Rising (due April 26 on Anticon), Lott recorded the whole album in a month – the shortest month of the year even.

So why did Lott record this album in a month when his debut album, At War With Walls and Mazes, was slowly built in complete privacy over nearly three years? This wasn’t Lott’s initial intention but he woke up late one morning in January to find a message from NPR’s All Songs Considered titled, “You busy?”

NPR brought their annual RPM Challenge to Lott’s attention. The challenge is an open call to create an album in 28 days, and Lott accepted this challenge.

Lott made the deadline, and got by with help from the yMusic sextet (Antony Hegarty, Sufjan Stevens, the National), DM Stith, Jace Everett and Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond).

After listening to the track “Rising”, it is hard to believe the record came together in such a hurry.
