Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the holiday movie season will be the remake of True Grit (Dec 22).
Based on a 1968 novel by Charles Portis, the original starred John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn, a hard-bitten, cynical Western hero who would prove popular enough to spawn a titular sequel, also starring Wayne. Kim Darby played the 14-year-old who hires Cogburn to track down and kill the killer of her father; in the remake, Hailee Steinfeld plays the role, while Jeff Bridges fills Wayne’s shoes and Josh Brolin is the killer.
The best news however is that the remake is directed and written for the screen by Joel and Ethan Coen; with those guys at the helm, and with great source material and cast, how can True Grit go wrong?
