We’ve just had our minds blown and emotions stirred by Lucille by Ludovic Debeurme. Originally published in France in 2006, the award-winning Lucille is Debeurme’s first graphic novel to be translated into English, and the Top Shelf publication is a beaut. Not only is the 500+ page tome lovely to look at but, as mentioned, the story – about two outcast teenagers – is wonderfully told and affecting

To say anymore would risk spoiling the spell cast by the French cartoonist’s artful and fluid storytelling. So instead, we’ve asked Top Shelf if we could offer the prize of a copy to a lucky contestant.

To win a copy of the just-published Lucille, all you have to do is:

  1. Sam S. says:

    Batman Inc. #7 was awesome.

  2. The last great comic I read was Sweet Tooth, by Jeff Lemire. I’ve heard nothing but amazing reviews of his Essex County, so I JUST picked up the collected version. I have a feeling I will be immensely pleased with it! I’m sadly just getting into graphic novels. I studied literature in university, and I’m really baffled as to why some graphic novels were not included in the curriculum of certain courses. There is a lot of value in many of these texts! I’ll hopefully get a chance to check out Lucille soon too!

  3. Shawn C. says:

Sara from Tegan & Sara promoted Essex County for Canada Reads, but the book was knocked out of the running early on. But now Lemire’s writing Superboy!

  4. Shawn C. says:

Funny, I had a copy of the latest Batman Inc in my hands yesterday… almost bought.

  5. Jacques N says:

I recently read Jason Brubaker’s reMIND. An amazing book!

  6. Shawn C. says:

Thanks Jacques, I’ll have to check that one out.

  7. The last great graphic novel I read was Exit Wounds by Rutu Modan, it was a great read. I have a children’s book illustrated by her as well and my kid loves it.

  8. LPcomics says:

The last great graphic novel I read was Blankets by Craig Thompson.

  9. Dr Dave says:

Just read Rick Remender and Esad Ribic’s latest UNCANNY X-FORCE collection, “Deathlok Nation” and it’s great! These guys (and Jerome Opena on previous “Apocalypse Solution”) are doing amazing sci-fi stories disguised as superhero comix.

  10. zhal says:

The last great comic I’v read (actually re-read) the Universal War from Marvel/Soleil. it is a nice, preofessional tale of an alternate Book of Genesis… :)

  11. Penny Goring (@triplecherry) says:

The last great graphic novel I read was Lost Girls – Alan Moore Melinda Gebbie. xxx

  12. Shawn C. says:

Hi Penny! I’ll ask Top Shelf if they can ship to the U.K. so we can enter you in the contest.

  13. Penny Goring (@triplecherry) says:

    Thanks.

  15. Niki Smith says:

Loved KOKO BE GOOD. I’ve heard great things about LUCILLE too!

  16. Andrew S says:

Really liked Anya’s Ghost, but the most different, excellent one I’ve read was Gingerbread Girl

  17. Megan H says:

The last great graphic novel I read was Stardust. The movie doesn’t even compare, sadly.

  18. SWS says:

Anya’s Ghost is a fantastic GN.

  19. Sean Ford says:

The last great graphic novel I read was Duncan the Wonder Dog by Adam Hines.

  20. OhCakeyGoodness says:

I loved loved LOVED Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol. I became familiar with her through the amazing Draw This Dress tumblr and finally went ahead and preordered the book. So glad I did; it is charming, haunting, engaging and beautifully drawn.

  21. R.O. Blechman’s Talking Lines distills truths in a package even more stark and punchy than Feiffer. He draws doodly figures in stage-like minimal layouts that play out allusive plots that resonate with rich and heavy undertones. His approach to humor appears breezy and natural, and it makes me laugh deeply, from the gut.

  22. Taylor E says:

The last great graphic novel I reread was Like A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron. But, the honor of the most recent goes to Mister Wonderful.

  23. Mike Newhouse-Bailey says:

The last great graphic novel I read was Owly: Flying Lessons to my 4-year old son. I love Owly and Andy Runton!

  24. maria says:

    Sin City

  25. Shawn C. says:

I should give this one another try…

  26. Barbara says:

The last great graphic novel I read was “Finder: Voice” by Carla Speed McNeil. The whole series is worth checking out.

  27. Rory says:

Last great graphic novel I read was this underground independently put out one called “Sassure’s Hypocrisy” by George Sharp. The art was kind of simple but it had that interesting subtext to mediocre situations. Very Harvey Pekar.

  28. chin yew says:

the last great graphic novel that i read is still Blankets, even though i’ve read many after. the scene where he burns the blanket still haunts me. and the love for her still bitters me.

  29. Bryan Koen says:

Last great g. novel I read was Asterios Polyp. High hopes for Lucille!

  30. Shawn C. says:

    Really liked that one too.

  31. kelly says:

I’ve been reading Alec: The Years Have Pants. It’s massive.

  32. James says:

I recently read Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea by Guy Delisle, a fascinating graphic novel about a Canadian animator’s experience in North Korea, aka “hermit country.” You get to experience a propaganda-free side of what it’s really like to live in N. Korea. Highly recommended.

  33. Andrew Fleming says:

Just finished Vol. 3 of Matz’s brilliant The Killer, also translated from the original French. Heavy stuff. Word is David Fincher might be bringing it to the big screen.
