Win a copy of Dave McKean’s erotic graphic novel Celluloid

First, the bad news: due to problems the publisher has had getting Celluloid into Canada (apparently it’s too much for the community college drop-outs who manage our border), this contest is open only to our American readers (both of them). (Note: Celluloid is available in some Canadian book and comic stores – we found a copy at RX Comics in Vancouver.)

The good news, however, is that Fantagraphics (@fantagraphics), in conjunction with The Snipe, has offered to give away a copy of this delightfully lascivious and rather beautiful book. It’s a wordless adventure that utilizes a variety of artistic techniques to tell the story of a woman who enters a secret world via a film strip. This is definitely a book for lovers of comics, high-quality erotica (or “smut” if you prefer) and the work of Dave McKean, whose multi-media art first came to the attention of comics readers in his covers for Vertigo’s Sandman series by Neil Gaiman.

the sandman covers collection is a constant source of inspiration

I first saw Dave McKean’s artwork in Stephen King’s Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass…I’d never seen anything like it. It blew me away and added a whole new level of creepiness to the Dark Tower saga. One panel is, for some reason, forever burned in my memory, “Smiling lips revealed cunning little teeth.” Still makes me shiver. http://www.darktowercompendium.com/dt4-10.jpg

  3. Shawn C. says:

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing the image, hadn’t seen that one before.

  4. I can’t pick between Sandman covers. I adored them all! McKean’s artwork is fabulous.

His work amazes me – especially the earlier Sandman covers that were pre-computer… only photos of elaborate multi-media collages, and has influenced my own work. Yay!

  6. Paul Henderson says:

    Batman: Arkham Asylum perfect

  7. Lorena says:

@Shawn, no problem! Here is a link to all McKean’s art from the book, if you haven’t seen the rest: http://www.darktowercompendium.com/fottergrafs-dt4.html

  8. Sean L. says:

Cages is one of my favorite graphic novels. Dave McKean really outdid himself with that one.

  9. Eemil F says:

The Sandman covers are really fascinating!

  10. Christian says:

McKean’s work on the Vertigo Tarot was pretty great…

  11. Jason Azzopardi says:

Cages is, after all these years, still one of the best things I’ve read in the medium.

Also a short piece he did with Grant Morrison titled “A Glass of Water”, published in the second or third issue of the Piranha Press anthology series “Fast Forward” way back in 1992.

One was about 400 pages. The other 5 or so. Both absolute amazing.

  12. Baby Landlord says:

I love Mckean’s art on John Cale’s autobiography What’s Welsh For Zen?

  13. James H. says:

Lost Girls by Alan Moore and Melinda Gebbie is a fantastic (and highly controversial) work of erotica, beautifully illustrated and as good as anything Moore has ever written.
