Lee “Scratch” Perry at the Commodore Thursday night.

Born Rainford Hugh Perry in 1936 in Kendal, Jamaica, Perry is noted as a pioneer in the development of dub music. He was one of the first to adopt effects and remixing to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks.

Through his career, Perry has worked with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin (with whom he wrote the song “Police and Thieves”(covered by the Clash on their first album), the Congos, Max Romeo and many others. He released his first album, The Upsetter, in 1969. In 2015, he released The Super Ape Strikes Again with the Belgian band Pura Vida.

A shout-out to Melo Productions, “Vancouver’s source for Top 40, funk, old school, R&B, reggae and Caribbean concerts, events and tropical boat cruises featuring the city’s best DJs” for getting us out to shoot.
