Preview – Yo! Vancity Laughs Vol. 9 at Yuk Yuk’s Vancouver, Jan 20 2015

– by Connor Fingler

Make this Tuesday night fun with Yuk Yuk’s Vancouver. The international comedy club is hosting Yo! Vancity Laughs vol. 9 on Jan 20.

After four sell-out shows at the end of 2014, Yuk Yuk’s is kicking off 2015 with another instalment of Yo! Vancity Laughs, Canada’s premier hip-hop & comedy event. Parody rap duo Game Genies will be the MCs for the evening. They’ll share the stage with comedians Patrick Maliha, Brendan Bourque, Kwasi Thomas, and Jonny Paul. DJ Alex Smith and hypeman Devon Alexander will keep the party going for this satire-filled event.

Patrick Maliha

With his extensive list of credentials, Maliha is sure to be a highlight. The Vancouver-based comedian is the world record holder for most impressions in a minute and was voted favourite Vancouver comedian in 2008 and 2009 in the Georgia Straight’s ‘Best of Vancouver’ awards. The comic also hosts, writes, and produces for a number of different television programs and is a voting member on the Vancouver Film Critics Circle.

Kwasi Thomas will deliver some beats of his own for this night of hip-hop hilarity. Thomas is featured on a newly released track by MD of the Boomsday Alliance. MD is a dedicated member of the Vancouver artist and producer collective known as the Boomsday Alliance.

Game Genies are the epitome of comedic hip-hop. Their Youtube series has gathered over 28,000 views as they play an emerging hip-hop duo that inadvertently pokes fun at the genre. With full commitment to character, Game Genies is wildly entertaining. They often incorporate the public into their sketches putting individuals on the spot to make things amusingly awkward and they manage convey a confidence about them that surely isn’t warranted.

Yo! Vancity Laughs vol.9 is at Yuk Yuk’s Vancouver (2837 Cambie St.), starting at 8 p.m. Jan 20. Tickets: $10 at yukyuks.com.
